Disposable – or Temporary email services – refers to an approach where a unique email address is used for every contact, entity, or for a limited number of times or uses. Temporary email services have been around for many years. However, not everyone knows the use and precautions that must be taken when using this type of service.

People use disposable addresses in these scenarios:

  • Opt in to marketing messages
  • Open an account
  • Download content
  • Enter a contest
  • Collect an incentive like a discount or freebie
  • Sign up for a social media account

Know the 3 kinds of disposable addresses

  1. Alias: This email address is usually a variation of a genuine email address and hosted by the user’s inbox provider, such as Gmail or Yahoo! Mail. Messages sent to that address go to the user’s inbox but can be filtered to a folder outside the primary inbox. It will accept messages until the user deletes it. People often use aliases to track where they have shared their primary email addresses: “john.doe+Walmart@Gmail.com” or “john.doe-Walmart@yahoo.com.”
  2. Forwarding account: This email address is created at a different domain from the user’s email account and forwards messages to that account. Your database won’t detect which inbox provider your subscriber is using to read your emails. It also will accept messages until the user deletes it, but you likely won’t get accurate open or click data on those emails.
  3. Non-forwarding throwaway account: Typically a one-time email message, also created at a different domain. Here’s an example: “D-1s030olkz6iy0qzip5leek008a@maildrop.cc.” These are your biggest nightmare because they will bounce after the first send and represent no value in your database.

All three kinds of disposables share one key trait: They’re low-quality addresses. People use them when they don’t value what they get from your brand, and they don’t generate quality data that will benefit your app or email program.

It’s not a good sign if you have a list with disposable emails, because you can be blacklisted if you send mails to these accounts, causing an impact on your IP reputation, and it won’t help you to reach your real potential users.
